Characterization of the Colloidal Properties of a Microbubble Contrast Agent

  • Original language description

Microbubbles are used as contrast agents in combination with ultrasound mostly for cardiovascular imaging and the assessment of perfusion of various organs and tumors. These systems are currently proposed for drug delivery applications. In the development process of a new contrast agent or drug delivery system is necessary to know colloidal properties of the system such as size distribution of microbubbles, phase stability of the system or progress of microbubble formation process. The aim of our studywas to evaluate mentioned properties of contrast agent SonoVue? and analogous phospholipid systems. Systems were studied using spectroscopic methods including UV-VIS spectroscopy and dynamic light scattering technique. Microbubble formation process was investigated by means of maximum bubble pressure tensiometry. It was found that surface activity as well as composition of the system is significant for microbubble formation process. Dynamic light scattering method shows that size of Sono
