The valorization of food losses and waste, which is generated about 270-290 kg per capita per year in Europe and North America, is receiving interests1. Development of the technologies helping to reuse low-cost food waste economically and sustainably is an important multidisciplinary research task. In the last years, a broad range of using food waste as the carbon source for the production of polyhydroxyalkanoates (PHA) has been described and studied. PHA are a class of polyesters of natural origin accumulated as carbon and energy storage materials in the form of intracellular granules by a wide variety of bacterial strains. In this work, grape pomace (a byproduct of the winery) was used as an inexpensive carbon source. Burkholderia cepacia, Burkholderia sacchari, and Pseudomonas putida utilized fermentable sugars present in grape pomace (mainly glucose and fructose) efficiently for the production of scl-PHA and mcl-PHA.
