Three N-phthalimide azo-azomethine dyes have been synthesized and spectrally characterized. DFT calculations of trans (E) imine ⇆ enamine and cis Z imine ⇆ enamine isomers have been performed. The photochromic behavior was investigated in different solvent polarity.
