Possible influence of Schisandra chinensis fruit extract on zooplankton
Original language description
Bioactive compounds from S. chinensis fruits have a potentially positive effect on human health, but they could have an inhibitory effect on lower aquatic organisms, such as Daphnia magna in concentrations which are potentially reachable in natural conditions, as shown in this pilot study. Since Daphnia magna serve as food for bigger aquatic animals and fish, they are an integral and essential part of a balanced aquatic ecosystem. The entire ecosystem can be damaged if zooplankton is negatively affected by any substance.
