Effect of steel-PET fiber reinforcement on the fire resistance of reactive powder concrete

  • Original language description

The hybrid fiber reinforced ultra-high performance concrete is novel material with exceptional properties. The combination of steel fibers and synthetic fibers provide ultra-high performance concrete with strength while the synthetic fibers provide other useful properties like increase in fire resistance. In this study, the not so often combination of steel and eco-friendly recycled PET fibers is used for the improvement of fire resistance. Manufacturing method which employs the use of vacuum is also rarely used. Firstly, the slump flow and mechanical properties of reference and hybrid ultra-high performance concrete was determined. Then, the fire resistance of these two mixtures was determined. Lastly, the relevance of PET fibers for the increase in fire resistance was studied with backscattered electron microscopy. It was found out that the addition of 0.125 vol. % is beneficial in terms of preventing explosive spalling while having statistically negligible impact on mechanical properties.
