Nowadays in the consequences of globalization and markets' extension, the companies need to identify their weaknesses in comparison with competitors and evaluate the potential benefits. There are two main purposes of this article. The first one is to give an overview of the benchmarking for better understanding. And the second one is to analyse why benchmarking has become widely usable among the companies over the last years. This tool takes up the first position in the survey of management tools and trends in 2009 conducted by Bain & Company. This paper describes the process of benchmarking, its types and advantages of its use.
