Automation, artificial intelligence along with advanced additive technologies helps companies to gain more flexibility, fast reaction to customer requirements and product customizing. Automation machines, robots, co-bots, automatic transport devices and advanced information systems replace some traditional jobs not only in the frame of production but also across the whole value chain. Type of activities is changing. Routine activities are automated in both production and administrative areas, creative work remains on the people. This requires a different approach to the necessary basic skills of labours. There are still differences on the level of automation and necessary labour skills between mass production and SMEs. The paper focuses on the analysis of “smart factory” elements and advanced technologies that can be used by small and medium enterprises and comparing the basic skills needed for this elements and technologies. It can be the basis for estimating of labours skills in future.
