Filtration-sorption ability of nanofibre filters for removal of arsenic in water

  • Original language description

Arsenic contaminated drinking water is a major problem in many parts of the world. An obvious health risk arises through consuming just this water, therefore, the elimination of arsenic constitutes an important step in water and wastewater treatment [1]. Numerous studies have proven that long-term exposure to arsenic in drinking water causes health problems: skin lesions (hyperpigmentation, hyperkeratosis), diseases affecting the blood vessels of the legs or feet, high blood pressure, reproductive disorders and cancer of the bladder, lungs, skin, kidney, nasal cavity, liver or prostate and other [2]. There are several different methods and techniques for removing arsenic in water. However, many of them have their limitations [3, 4]. Our research focuses on removing of arsenic from contaminated water via a microfiltration nanostructured membrane prepared from polymeric nanofibers materials [5, 6], applied in prospective combination with an inorganic sorption material (iron oxide). Membranes prepared fr
