Synthesis and Characterization of Polyurethane Elastomers Based on Poly(ethylene glycol) and Poly(caprolactone) with Potential Use in Medicine
Original language description
Biodegradable polyurethane (bio-PU) elastomers with potential use as a scaffolds in regenerative medicine were synthesized by solvent free method using poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG), poly(caprolactone) (PCL) and hexamethylene diisocyanate (HMDI) catalyzedwith stannous octoate. Different diol hydrophilic (PEG) to hydrophobic (PCL) content ratios of 70:30, 50:50 and 30:70 were used. Samples made of one type of diol, either hydrophilic PEG or hydrophobic PCL, were synthesized as well. Effect of bio-PU composition on the swelling and hydrolytic stability was investigated together with testing mechanical properties of prepared samples. Chemical composition was evaluated by infrared spectroscopy and the degree of conversion was measured by extraction of the specimens in acetone. Thermal stability was measured by thermogravimetric analysis and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) was used to observe thermal properties such as glass transition and melting temperature.
