An Experimental Comparison of Laser Interferometer Methods for Accurate Determination of Resonant Frequencies in a Turbine Wheel Assembly
Original language description
This paper presents experimental research on a turbine wheel assembly used in car engines. The aim the paper is to investigate various procedures ensuring optimal search of resonant frequencies related to mechanical excitation and measuring methods. To perform the mechanical excitation described in the article, we used a vibration shaker and a modal hammer. In the given context, two measurement approaches are compared: the application of a single-point vibrometer, and the use of a special differential vibrometer. The purpose of the research is to facilitate reliable diagnostics of resonant frequencies in turbine blades, which is a process markedly responsible for the correct balancing of a turbine wheel. Such accurate determination of the resonant frequencies of a turbine wheel influences the life of the turbocharger and, moreover, enables us to eliminate possible damage to an automotive engine caused by vibrations. All the indicated measurements are mutually compared, and another comparison is performed involving the simulation results obtained from the modal analysis. The experiments demonstrate the advantages, disadvantages and differences characterising the different types of excitation and laser interferometer measurement, with a special focus on the streamlining and acceleration of experimental measurements in the development of new turbine wheels.
