Adherence and Growth of Cariogenic Biofilms on Dental Dimethacrylate-Based Resin Substrates

  • Original language description

Dental plaque is a complex microbial biofilm consisting of hundreds of bacterial species embedded within a self-produced matrix of extracellular polymeric substance (EPS). In the current dental practice, resin composite restorative materials with the matrix based on dimethacrylate monomers are often the first choice for many convenient properties. However, the dental plaque deposition is provably influenced by an introduction of the novel artificial surface to the oral environment. This may lead to theproliferation of cariogenic bacterial species and eventual origination of secondary caries, especially in the area of tooth-restoration interface. The quantities of Streptococcus mutans biofilms on commonly used dimethacrylate resin substrates were evaluated. This included the systems based on aromatic bis-GMA and bis-EMA and aliphatic TEGDMA monomers and their copolymers. Surface free energy (SFE) of each system was determined via the contact angle measurement. Biofilms were quantified
