Nanoporous anodic alumina films grown in citric acid electrolytes at poten- tials exceeding 300V are of considerable interest both for applications in electronics and as models for studying film formation at frontier conditions [1]. However, a reproducible anodic process for steady-state alumina growth at moderate current densities remains a challenge due to the diffi- culty to reveal and maintain the right balance between the technological, electrical and electrolytic conditions for anodizing and pre-anodizing treat- ments. Here we demonstrate the impact of important surface finishing techniques for Al foils, such as annealing and electropolishing, on the pore nucleation and growth during galvanostatic anodization in citric acid elec- trolytes.
