Laser-Induced Breakdown Spectroscopy analysis used for polymer discrimination in inert atmosphere

  • Original language description

This work deals with the discrimination of commercial polymers having various composition and molecular structure. We chose aliphatic (polypropylene, polyamide-66, polyoxymethylene) and aromatic (polystyrene, acrylonitrile-butadiene-styrene) polymers with/without heterogeneous atoms (nitrogen and oxygen) in their backbone structure. The emission spectra of all examined polymers are exceedingly similar; they exhibit a characteristic atomic/ionic emission lines from four biogenic elements (carbon, hydrogen, nitrogen and oxygen) and specific molecular emission bands. There are two sources of molecular bands - native bonds and bonds created from an interaction of plasma with buffers gas molecules. We try to clarify a correlation between the polymer structure and signal responses. In order to achieve this, we focused on intensities of spectral molecular bands such as carbon dimer (C2 Swan system at 516.5 nm) and cyano (CN band at 338.3 nm) bands[1,2]. For this reason, we studied structurally different poly
