Original language description
In this work, hydrophobic and amphiphilic bioresorbable electrospun microfibers were used to reinforce the calcium phosphate bone cement. Addition of these fibers increased mechanical properties in terms of compressive strength. The fiber amount was optimized in terms of final cement injectability. X-ray diffraction analysis proved full transformation of calcium phosphate to calcium defficient hydroxyapatite after fiber addition. Scanning electron microscopy was used to study microstructure and failure modes at crack interfaces. For better resorption rates, microporositi was modulated. Experiments proved utilization of microfibers as bone cement reinforcement and when loaded with bioactive molecules, they can be used in cements as drug delivery systems.
