Architectural Sculpture in Church Interiors
Original language description
The study analyses meaning of the architectural sculpture in Church interiors with respect to the meaning of the Church and church building itself as a sacramental aria inserted in profane world. It defines hierarchic order and meaning of spaces in the church interior (narthex, nave, choir and sacristy) and explores how the ideological structure corresponds to the placement of distinctive figural architectural sculpture. In addition it differentiate small rural churches, urban churches and monastic churches with respect to the specific social and cultural conditions in each of these types. Here the area of northwest Bohemia is explored as a case study. The authors analyse in detail placement and iconography of figural architectural sculpture in individual churches. Their interpretation and explanation is based on patrology, medieval exegesis and religious literature.
