The view from Central Europe: A Bohemian Artist in New Zealand
Original language description
The study explores Lindauer’s personal life, art education and the first chapter of his life as an artist in Pilsen. It narrates his artistic beginnings and early career in central Europe. The authors of the study pay attention to Lindauer’s cooperation on the painting decoration of Sts Cyril and Methodius Chapel in Valašské Klobouky (as a member of the workshop of Carl Hemmerlein from which the execution of the work was ordered) and his career in Pilsen as a portraitist of Pilsen citizens. The study also examine how his portraits of The Māori inhabitants after his arrival in New Zealand were determined by the conditions of his central European artistic training.Portraits
