Original language description
Albumin is a water soluble, nonglycosylated protein that is largely responsible for plasma oncotic pressure. It binds cations, fatty acids, bilirubin, and hormones. In addition, albumin acts as carrier for medication and has antioxidant, antiinflammatory and acid base-buffering properties. Patients with sepsis often display hypoalbuminemia of multifactorial cause. Therefore, there is a strong physiologic rationale to use albumin solutions as resuscitation fluids during sepsis. A recent survey on albumin uses in shock, however, documented wildly variable attitudes of intensivists. More than one-third of clinicians would never or rarely use albumin in septic shock, and roughly one-third of them would infuse it frequently or almost always in these patients.
