Trichomonas Vaginalis-Associated Chronic Cervicitis May Imitate p16 Negative Cervical HPV-Independent Squamous Cell Carcinoma Precursor Lesions in Menopausal Women

  • Original language description

The topic of HPV-independent (HPVI) cervical squamous cell carcinomas (SCC) and precursor lesions brings in a pitfall of Trichomonas vaginalis-associated chronic cervicitis in menopausal women imitating p16-negative cervical HPVI SCC precursor lesions. Specifically, changes combine histologic features of dVIN-like and basaloid-like histology, as was recently described by Regauer and Stolnicu. As of now, 17 individual HPVI precursor lesions have been reported.1-3 The first description comes from Regauer et al1, describing 9 cases with chronic inflammatory infiltrate in 6 of 9 cases. The p16 expression in 3 pure HPVI precursor lesions was reported as positive in 2 cases (no. 1, 3) and negative in 1 case (no. 2). Subsequently, authors reported on 3 more cases-all were p16 negative, and 2 of them were documented to present a chronic inflammatory infiltrate.
