Mechanical large bowel obstruction and acute pseudo obstruction of colon may be indistinguishable clinically or intra-operatively and lead to a delay in definitive treatment.Acute colonic pseudo obstruction is not an uncommon cause of an acute distensionof the colon,characterized by the signs and symptoms of large-bowel obstruction but without a detectable mechanical cause. In both the conditions early recognition and appropriate management are critical in minimizing the high morbidity and mortality from caecal perforation.
