Evaluation of the effect of occupational therapy on the performance of activities of daily living in patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease
Original language description
According to both international and Czech sources, occupational therapy plays a vital role in the comprehensive pulmonary rehabilitation of patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), particularly because of its beneficial impact on activities of daily living (ADLs). Despite this, the integration of occupational therapy into clinical practice in the Czech Republic remains limited, with few facilities offering this service to patients with COPD. To date, no studies in the Czech Republic remains limited, with few facilities offering this service to patiens with COPD. To date no studies in the Czech Republic have investigated the effects of occupational therapy on the functional status of patients with COPD. Therefore, this study aimed to assess the impact of occupational therapy education, either alone or combined with monthly occupational therapy sessions, on the functional status of patients with COPD. The study findings indicate that both monthly occupational therpy and education on performing problematic ADLs, followed by self-administered home therapy, significantly improve the functional status of patients with COPD. Improvements were observed in chest expansion, normal and maximum walking speeds, number of repetitions in the one-minute sit-to-stand test, and ease of performing routine ADLs, as measured by the Manchester Respiratory Activities of Daily Living Questionnaire. Given these positive outcomes, incorporating occupational therapy into the holistic treatment regimen for patients with COPD, particularly those struggling with ADLs, is highly recommended. This pilot study underscores the potential benefits of occupational therapy in improving the quality of life for patients with COPD.
