Overview of pregnancy-associated thrombotic microangiopathies - a practical guidance

  • Original language description

Pregnancy-associated thrombotic microangiopathies (TMA) is a term encompassing a wide spectrum of disorders in pregnant women with various etiologies but a common feature – endothelial injury. In addition to genuine TMAs, there are also several conditions that do not meet the strict definition of TMA, yet share overlapping clinical features, making the diagnosis highly challenging. This article provides an overview of the individual TMAs associated with pregnancy or the postpartum period, discusses the pathophysiology of individual conditions and their respective targeted treatments. Finally, we provide a differential diagnostic approach in patients with suspected pregnancy-associated TMA, based on basic laboratory findings and the clinical course of the disease.
