Unravelling Fake News in Political and Media Contexts: Semiotic Approach to Misinformation
Original language description
Research on fake news in political and media contexts intensified due to its impact on political discourse, social cohesion, and public trust. The proliferation of misinformation on digital platforms not only misled audiences but also reshaped perceptions of reality by manipulating signs and symbols to construct persuasive narratives. In this study, semiotic models—the dyadic model, Barthes’ theory of myth, and Greimas and Courtés’ theory of the veridictory square—were applied to identify and analyse the manipulation of signs in political misinformation. These models were selected for their ability to uncover both the surface-level construction of messages and the deeper ideological frameworks sustaining them. Using qualitative content analysis, specific examples from contemporary media were examined to explore how cultural symbols, linguistic choices, and emotional triggers were strategically employed to reinforce political narratives and undermine trust in traditional information sources. The results demonstrated that fake news functioned not as isolated falsehoods but as deliberate semiotic constructions designed to distort meaning, normalize particular viewpoints, and conceal political interests. The study concluded that semiotic analysis provided valuable tools for exposing hidden ideologies in political messaging and emphasized the importance of fostering semiotic literacy to strengthen critical media awareness and democratic discourse.
