Original language description
We discuss a method for generating ultra-high intensity electromagnetic fields based on laser pulse compression, carrier frequency up-conversion, and focusing by a relativistically moving plasma mirror in the relativistic transparency regime of the irradiated plasma target. We show that using two intensified head-on-colliding electromagnetic pulses paves the way to the development of a source of coherent hard X-rays of extremely high intensity, which may allow us to reach the critical field of quantum electrodynamics (the Sauter-Schwinger limit) using powerful lasers.
