NESVADBA, Vladimír, Josef PATZAK and Karel KROFTA. New hop varieties in Czech Republic. In: F. WEIHRAUCH, ed. Proceedings of the Scientific-Technical Commission 07 – 11 July 2019, Bischoffsheim, France. Wolnzach: Scientific-Technical Commission of the International Hop Growers' Convention, 2019, p. 103. ISSN 2512-3785. Genetic resources are widely used for flavour hops breeding. Especially male plants with the origin in North America are of high importance. Each year 7,000 hop plants are planted, from which forty to sixty genotypes with interesting aroma are selected. New Czech hop varieties Gaia and Boomerang (bitter hops) were registered in 2017, whereas Country and Jazz (dwarf hops) were registered in January 2018. New aroma-type cultivars Saaz Comfort (aroma), Saaz Brilliant (aroma), Saaz Shine (aroma), Mimosa (flavour) and Blues (dwarf hops) will be registered in 2019. Several new promising aroma, bitter and flavour genotypes are currently under registration. We also produce experimental brews with dry hoping with new Czech hop varieties. Because of changes in hop aroma after drying, maximally fifteen genotypes are selected for this purpose. Assessment of flavour in dry hop cones is carried out according to the character panel (citrusy, spicy, floral, fruity, woody) and its intensity. Fifty experts from hop and brewing industries assess these hops. Flavour of hop cones is evaluated by smelling as well as in beers
