New Chicks on the Bloc: Punk in the Communism

  • Original language description

This chapter examines women’s participation in punk scenes in socialist Eastern Europe from the late 1970s to the 1980s, situating their creative practices within conditions of political repression, limited cultural exchange, and gendered constraints. Drawing on interviews, archival materials, and autoethnographic insights, the author maps female punk activity across Czechoslovakia, Yugoslavia, Estonia, and the USSR. The text highlights how women musicians negotiated the socialist “gender regime,” appropriated Western punk influences, and created autonomous spaces of expression despite censorship and infrastructural limitations. Through case studies (e.g., Dybbuk/Zuby nehty, Tožibabe, Ave Luna, Yanka Dyagileva), the chapter reframes punk as both a cultural and political practice, emphasizing everyday resistance, DIY ethics, and transnational imaginaries. It contributes to feminist music history by uncovering marginalized voices and challenging male-dominated narratives of Eastern European underground culture.
