Willingness of the Elderly to Participate in the Development of Urban Environment

  • Original language description

Ageing and urbanization represent important trends that co-determine the dynamics and direction of city development. The proportion of elderly has approximately doubled in the last fifty years and will exceed one third of the population in the next thirty years. Two-thirds of the population are expected to live in urban areas by 2050. Ageing and urbanization pose urgent challenges, as these processes carry risks of social exclusion, unequal access to resources and unequal opportunities for a healthy life. To prevent seniors from being in such a vulnerable position, it is important to ensure a supportive urban environment and to implement effective policies enabling seniors to cope with everyday situations. The results show that successful age-friendly interventions need to be adequately integrated into institutional and implementation frameworks. Moreover, the willingness to participate varies between social groups. The findings are based on quantitative research that was conducted on a representative sample of seniors 64 to 84 years old in Czechia. The data collection had the form of face-to-face interviews; the total sample involves 2018 respondents from all regions of the country.
