Environmental Application of Smelting ? Combination of Smelting Technique with Gasification for Solid Waste Management
Original language description
Waste gasification-smelting technology basically produces two types of by-product from waste ? fuel gas (so-called syngas) and char (mainly ash). The ash is smelted to form a molten slag. However, this combination uses two pieces of equipment ? a smelting furnace and a thermal decomposition furnace, so it is undesirable from the economic viewpoint (cost of plant construction). A new furnace was designed, and this furnace is a shaft type in which waste is gasified and smelted in one process using a top-blow lance together with side-blow oxygen lances. That is, it is a one-process furnace: (i) the upper part of the furnace functions as a gasifier, and (ii) the lower part functions as a smelting combustor.
