Nutrient accumulation by Phragmites australis and Phalaris arundinacea growing in constructed wetlands for wastewater treatment
Original language description
In the Czech Republic, Phragmites australis (Cav.) Trin. ex Steudel and Phalaris arundinacea L. have widely been used in HF CWs. The objective of the paper was to evaluate and compare the accumulation of nutrients (standing stocks) in both plants. The study was carried out at two horizontal flow constructed wetlands ? Mořina and Břehov. CW Mořina (700 PE) was built in 2000 and it treats sewage from a separate sewer system. CW Břehov (100 PE) was built in 2003 and it has been designed to treat wastewaterfrom the combined sewer system. Phalaris and Phragmites are planted in bands parallel to the water flow. When the results are related to nutrient removal from wastewater via harvesting of the aboveground biomass the observations indicate that Phragmiteswould be more effective for N removal while Phalaris would perform better for phosphorus removal.
