Constructed wetlands in the Czech Republic: 20 years of experience.
Original language description
Constructed wetlands with horizontal sub-surface flow has been used for wastewater treatment in the Czech Republic since 1989. At present, about 250 CWs are in operation in the Czech Republic. Most systems are built to treat domestic or municipal wastewater. The treatment performance is very good in terms of removal of organics (BOD5, COD) and suspended solids, i.e. parameters which are limited in the discharge from small sources pollution. Removal of nitrogen and phosphorus is lower. Constructed wetlands proved to be a suitable alternative for treatment of sewage from small sources of pollution up to about 1000 PE.
