Three-stage constructed wetland for on-site wastewater treatment
Original language description
Three-stage constructed wetland for treatment of municipal sewage consists of a saturated vertical flow wetland, free-drain vertical wetland and horizontal subsurface flow wetland staged in series. After the second stage the water is recirculated (1:1) to the first wetland. This arrangement was selected in order to primarily achieve high removal of both ammonia and nitrate. The average COD concentrations were 245, 102, 48 and 40 mg L-1 in the inflow and after each stage, respectively with the last concentration representing the final outflow. Removal of ammonia-N was also very efficient with respective concentrations of 26.6, 18.2, 2.7 and 2.8 mg L-1. The oxidation of ammonia-N took place in the second (freedrain) vertical stage and interestingly the NH4-N concentration remained below 2 mg L-1 during the whole January 2010 when the air temperatures were constantly below 0°C and occasionally dropped down to -20°C.
