Non-Transgenic Prunus Domestica Genotypes and Their Resistance to Sharka Virus

  • Original language description

Sharka (or plum pox) is an important viral disease caused by the Plum pox virus (PPV). PPV can infect many ornamental and agriculturally important species in the genus Primus. Sharka is regarded the most devastating disease of stone fruit in Europe. PPV was firstly reported in the Czech Republic in the 1930s. Since then, PPV has widespread almost on the whole territory. Currently, most of the main plum growing areas are stricken by the disease. The pathogen deteriorates fruit quality and lowers yield endangering the productivity and economic profitability of domestic stone fruit industry. Low availability of resistant high quality cultivars was the major reason for decline of plum growing in the Czech Republic after the Second World War. Crowing of PPV resistant plum genotypes is a basic possibility of protection. Therefore an experiment with resistance evaluation of selected non- transgenic plum cultivars after PPV artificial inoculation was established in aphid- proof screenhouses in 2010. Containerised plants of each cultivar in the experiment were artificially inoculated with two strains of PPV (5 plants with PPV-M and 5 plants with PPV-D) second year after planting. The third year after experiment establishment, PPV was not proven in cultivar Toptaste. ELISA testing and observation of PPV symptoms will continue in following years.
