The new VSUO varieties (Czech Republic)

  • Original language description

The breeding programme of VSUO Holovousy has been ongoing for more than 50 years and is focused on sweet cherries from 1970s. In the early 1970s, a cross-breeding plan for the new cherry-breeding program was drawn up in collaboration with the German Institute in Dresden-Pillnitz. It was mainly focused on obtaining profitable varieties suitable for mechanized harvesting and processing industry. It also focused on the resistance of fruit against cracking and flowers to late spring frosts. Other objectives include increasing fruit quality, especially size, firmness and taste, followed by early or very late harvest maturity. Later a self-fertility also was added to the programme as an important new character. Hand in hand with breeding, the introduction and testing is carried out of new prospective varieties from abroad, to provide the breeding programme with suitable genotypes with valuable properties. Time of ripening of our varieties completely covers total cherry harvesting season from the first to the seventh cherry week. Presented varieties fully cover four to five marketing weeks. The varieties ‘Christiana’, ‘Early Korvik’, ‘Felicita’, ‘Irena’, ‘Kasandra’ and ‘Tamara’ were registered in the Czech Republic in the Czech National List. In 2013 were cherry varieties ‘Christiana’, ‘Kasandra’ and ‘Tamara’ registered in CPVO and later also variety ‘Early Korvik’ in 2014. Variety ‘Tamara’ is also registered in Australia and Switzerland and was granted US plant patent. VSUO Holovousy cooperates worldwide with companies interested in propagating and marketing under licence agreements.
