Apricot flowering time prediction using growing degree hours

  • Original language description

The increasing fluctuations in weather conditions in recent decades and the associated change in temperature conditions especially in spring and early spring leads to situations where significantly higher temperatures in January, February or March accelerate beginning of the fruit tree vegetation. In the case of spring frosts, even if they occur in the usual terms as in the past, flowers or already developed fruits will subsequently freeze causing crop damages. Fruit growers try to prevent these damages by various technical measures, but with regard to longer-term planning, they need to know at least approximately the flowering date in the given year. The method of flowering prediction of apricots (Prunus armeniaca L.) according to temperature models is elaborated in this work. Phenological phases of beginning of apricot flowering at locality of Velké Bílovice in South Moravia (Czech Republic) were recorded in years 1998–2018. Calculations of growing degree days (GDD) and growing degree hours (GDH) were performed. The variant of GDH with threshold value of +5 °C (SET+5) corresponded to flowering time as the most accurate. This threshold temperature can be used to predict the time of apricot flowering. Accumulated SET+5 from the beginning of the year to flowering has an average value of 2600 ° C.
