New columnar apple variety in Australia - Herald

Original language description

Herald with preliminary designation HL 5 arose after crossing of cultivars ' Florina' and 'Telamon'. The vigour of trees is medium and they have typical columnar growth habit that is suitable for extremely dense plantings arranged like vertical cordons. Fruits have slightly above medium size (137- 198 g) and their shape varies from widely conical to s flatly globular. The ground - colour of skin is yellow - green that isup to 90 % surface area covered by bright red over colour mainly in washed performance. Skin is rather thick and firm. Fruits are medium resistant to bruising. Taste is acidulated sweet, pleasantly aromatic, in a proper stage excellent. Cultivar is resistant against scab and only very slightly susceptible to powdery mildew. Yields are precocious, very high but bearing pattern has a tendency to become easily biennial. Time of harvest ripening is late and fruits are storable until spring.
