  • Original language description

Fruit size and weight can increase the price of cherries and marketability of production. Nowadays growers are looking for high-sized cherry cultivars with optimal size 30 mm and higher in the fruit width. The breeding programme focused on establishing new sweet cherry cultivars (Prunus avium L.) started in Holovousy during the early seventies of the last century. More than 25 sweet cherry cultivars were released to the present day. Emphasis is put on the size and firmness of fruits, their taste and reliable cropping potential. The most promising cultivars ‘Tamara’, ‘Horka’, ‘Felicita’, ‘Elza’, ‘Sandra’ and ‘Irena’ were tested. Samples of fruits were collected in covered (VOEN system) experimental cherry plantings at the location Holovousy. Results obtained in experiments performed in years 2017 – 2020 showed high fruit weight, big fruit size, high fruit firmness and fruit sweetness. Cultivars ‘Tamara’ and ‘Horka’ were assessed as the biggest ones with fruit weight 12.4 g. Cultivar ‘Tamara’ was evaluated as the highest fruit size one over 30 mm. Cultivar ‘Felicita’ is self-fertile, cultivar ‘Sandra’ is the most resistant to fruit cracking. Cultivar ‘Elza’ is characterized by high fruit quality with high fruit firmness. Cultivar Irena that is good pollinator of ‘Regina’ was assessed as the sweetest one. All cultivars are characterized by large or very large fruits, dark red skin colour, good fruit quality and excellent aromatic taste.
