PERFORMANCE OF VEGETATIVE AND GENERATIVE GROWTH OF SWEET CHERRIES IN A HIGH DENSITY PLANTING WITHOUT PRUNING

  • Original language description

The aim of the study was to recognise a natural performance of extension growth and a development of fruiting organs of sweet cherry trees growing in a very dense planting without any pruning or pinching. It seems in a general view that experimental trees on the standard rootstock have attained a critical density (a canopy volume of 3-5 m3 per tree) during the 4th or 5th leaf (with some varietal differences). The next development of trees without pruning behind this boundary have been obviously detrimental for an economic value of the orchard. The cultivars on the dwarf rootstocks developed about 50-100% more fruiting organs per length unit of growth. With practical point of view especially the combination of the cultivar ,Vanda, with the rootstock P-HL-A seems to be very suitable for dense plantings of small tree forms of sweet cherries and amount of pruning with it could be really minimal.
