Electrospinning of hyaluronic acid/polyethylene oxide blended nanofibres

  • Original language description

Electrospinning is an efficient technique for the fabrication of polymer nanofibers. Electrospinning processability of natural biopolymers is, in general, fairly poor. However natural biopolymers are more suitable for biomedical applications. Polymer blends can provide an efficient way to fulfill requirements for material properties and good spinnability. Hyaluronic acid (HA) is a linear polysaccharide with many important biological functions. HA and its derivatives have been used extensively in biomedical field. To overcome the poor electrospinnability of HA solution, synthetic polymers such as polyethylene oxide (PEO) were blended with HA solution. A series of PEO/HA blend nanofibrous membranes with different weight ratio of PEO to HA were fabricatedby electrospinning method. Effects of varying blend ratios and concentrations on fiber formation were studied. The morphology, diameter, and structure of electrospun nanofibers were investigated by scanning electron microscopy.
