The soap story: saponin aescin, both the antifungal agent and a potent inducer of plant immunity providing a broad-spectrum resistance

  • Original language description

The 43rd FEBS Congress Prague, 7-12 July, 2018/ FEBS Open Bio, 8, 2018, 8, s.16. Saponins are secondary metabolites, widespread in plant kingdom. They are constituted of triterpene/steroidal derivative linked to glycoside moieties; therefore exhibiting amphiphilic properties. Saponins exert a broad spectrum of biological activities on different organisms, including general antimicrobial, antiviral, insecticidal or anti-inflammatory activity. Due to their antimicrobial activities saponins are involved in plant defense. Here we show that aescin triggers an efficient protection of oilseed rape Brassica napus against a hemibiotrophic pathogen Leptosphaeria maculans, which is comparable to protection provided by commercially used fungicides. However, surprisingly, this protection is mainly based on the massive activation of plant immune system. Besides, the antifungal activity of aescin was characterized and screened among important pathogens of oilseed rape and different cereals and EC50 values were determined.Taken together our data suggest that beyond its antimicrobial activity saponin aescin is able to activate plant immunity providing a broadspectrum resistance.
