Long-term trends in the yield potential of wheat and assumptions of further increase in yield and grain quality. Lecture for agronomists from Ukraine
Original language description
A lecture was held on Novemer 11, 2019 for visit of twenty agronomists from Ukraine. The yield trends of wheat caused by breeding and increase of energy inputs into the environment were described. The Green Revolution period and the Post Green Revolution period were characterized on the basis of UPOV statistics. Examples of wheat with different morphological structure of the spike (long glume, multirow spike) were presented as possible ways for directly influencing the harvest index. It was stated that further increases in yield potentials must be done by increasing spike productivity (kernel weight per spike) and not by reducing plant length. Wheat genotypes cumulating genes for different grain colour will increase the carotenoids and anthocyanins content and will be perspective.
