    As the use of chemical products is being reduced, the use of biological control is becoming common practice in crop production. One group of organisms suitable for use in plant protection is Rhizoctonia-like (Rh-like) fungi. Within this group, we can also find mutualistic species forming endophytic associations with a large group of higher plants and also mycorrhizal symbioses. The benefits of mutualistic endophytic association may be diverse, including mitigating the devastating effect of pathogens such as Fusarium culmorum, but more detailed information is still lacking. Rh-like fungi can in most cases be cultivated on organic substrates, which simplifies their use on a larger scale. We focused on the ability of five Rh-like fungi (from the genera Tulasnella and Ceratobasidium) isolated from orchid mycorrhizae, the endophytic fungi Serendipita indica and Microdochium bolleyi, and the pathogenic Ceratobasidium cereale to suppress the growth of pathogenic F. culmorum or Pyrenophora teres in vitro and to alleviate the symptoms of disease caused by F. culmorum on wheat grown in a growth chamber, as well as the effect on barley under field conditions. Some of the Rh-like fungi affected the growth of plant pathogens in petri dishes, then complex interactions between endophytes and plants were tested. A beneficial effect was observed especially in pot experiments where wheat plants were negatively affected by F. culmorum. Inoculation with S. indica resulted in higher dry shoot biomass compared to plants treated with the fungicide. The effect of these endophytes on plant signaling pathways, plant defense responses, factors influencing colonization levels, and survival of infectious particles in the habitat are promising for further work.
