Nickel influence to the stress corrosion and stacking fault energy of stainless steels
Original language description
The present paper addresses the characteristics of the stainless manganese-chromium steels and particularly on the influence of nickel content on the stress corrosion cracking resistance in chloride and the stacking fault energy. The basic type with lownickel content was found to be highly resistant to stress corrosion cracking. The addition of nickel in excess of 0.5 wt% and especially in the range 2-8% impairs the resistance. The stacking fault energy was measured on the heats with 2-8 wt% Ni from the regular nodes. In the heats with lower nickel content numerous belts of the stacking fault are rather common and the expended dislocation nodes only occasionally. When nickel content rises to more than 5 wt% Ni, resistance to the stress corrosion cracking begins to seemingly rise with increasing stacking fault energy, but this resistance is not sufficient event when nickel content is around 10%.
