    Laser hardening parameters influencing component lifetime and residual stresses.

    Laser surface hardening is an advanced method of surface treatment of structural steels with a great potential for wide industrial applications. Results and findings published recently indicate that upon treatment with this technology, the fatigue resistance of the material can either decline or increase, even considerably, depending on numerous base material characteristics, laser hardening parameters and other factors. This contribution contains results of a partial study of effects of laser hardeningon fatigue resistance of relatively small specimens from 42CrMo4 steel. Two different parameters of treatment were used, namely two speeds of laser beam across the material surface at a constant beam energy. The lower speed led to slightly lower fatigueresistance, whereas the higher speed to a slightly higher fatigue resistance and fatigue limit than in the initial material. The results are discussed with regard to residuals stresses.
