Dynamic lateral stiffness of GRP springs as a crucial vehicle characteristics in comparison with conventional steel springs

  • Original language description

Lateral characteristics of springs are very important properties and it is rather strange that practically no attention has being given to them by now. However, these characteristics are crucial for overall vehicle ride properties and particularly in case of railway vehicles, they crucially affect, how the vehicle is environmentally friendly in terms of damaging the track. High lateral stiffness causes unfavourable high lateral forces at track curves and lateral unevennesses. Such unevennesses are then increased and deteriorated very rapidly. On the contrary, suspensions and springs with low lateral stiffness, which are "softer", can be considered as track friendly from this viewpoint. Results of the experimental programme definitely confirmed that composite GRP springs have a great potential from the viewpoint of track friendliness. Moreover, their properties are very self consistent in service from different reasons, an absence of corrosion being one of them. The results can be considered as one of important points promoting the use of GRP springs and use of GRP composites in suspensions in general in track, road and environmentally friendly vehicles
