The Impact of E-Commerce and Digital Markets on European Economic Growth: A Comparative Analysis of Germany and the Czech Republic
Original language description
This article examines the interrelationships between e-commerce, digital markets, and economic growth within the European Union, with particular emphasis on a comparative analysis of Germany (Western Europe) and the Czech Republic (Eastern Europe) over the period 2015–2024. Employing Eurostat data alongside a comparative case study methodology, the study demonstrates that the Czech Republic—representing an emergent model of a digital economy in Eastern Europe—recorded a higher average GDP growth rate (2.2%) than Germany (0.78%), notwithstanding its comparatively lower level of digital maturity. The findings suggest that institutional flexibility, sustained e-commerce adoption, and an export-oriented economic structure constitute significant drivers of growth in the digital era, thereby challenging conventional interpretations of an East–West “digital divide”. This article contributes to the digital economy literature by elucidating the heterogeneous trajectories of digital transformation across Europe.
