This article is concerned with the concept of speakers’ accommodation in several of its theoretical overlaps in the field of sociolinguistics and communication, i.e., assimilation and acculturation of immigrants, contact between speakers of majority and speakers of minority languages, code-switching as a strategy for moving toward or away from another speaker, language values and attitudes reflected not only in speakers’ language behaviors but also in their lexicons and choice of grammar patterns, bilingualism and multilingualism as strategies to gain power over or yield to the other, and language shift and loss as stages in the process of accommodation and change. Central to the topic is the theory of accommodation in communication.
