This presentation objective is not to present any specific research results but to acquaint with the development and status quo of soil ecotoxicology role in soil protection in the Czech Republic. The scientific basis for the soil protection against thechemical pollution is the soil ecotoxicology which studies the relationships between soil organisms and pollutants. Contemporary legislative for soil protection against the contamination is usually based on the chemical limits in soils or in the materials which are applied on soil. However, chemical measures cannot address all hazards, because not all chemicals are analyzed and unpredictable combinations of effects in mixtures. There must be included tests of ecotoxicity
