The Czech Republic is facing significant reforms in student funding consisting of the implementation of tuition fees and new systems of student financial aid. In searching for efficient systems of student funding that may serve as models for the Czech reforms, the Netherlands is one of the most interesting candidates. The aim of chapter, based on data from the EUROSTUDENT IV project (2009) and EU-SILC survey data (2005), is to contribute to a better understanding of the impact of financial conditions onhigher education participation among students from different socio-economic backgrounds by comparing the Netherlands with the Czech Republic.
