  • Original language description

Timber and earth architecture is one of the most signi cant topics in research on building development and the character of the development of medieval cities. Not only in Czech, but also in foreign archaeological literature, for the time being, with a few exceptions, we lack a summary of knowledge about timber framed structures in early Central European cities, including a more general analysis of subtopics such as construction, spatial disposition or chronology. It is the oor levels of either underground or above ground parts of timber and earth built objects that are one of the few sources possible to provide information, not only about the use of a building, but also information about cultural practices associated with maintaining the surface of usable areas. e method that can be applied to the research of occupational surfaces is micromor phology in the archaeological context. is methodological approach has been applied since 2006 to the research of underground and above ground parts of timber and earth architecture in the city of Brno, Czech Republic. From the objects examined so far, the number of which is more than two dozen, it is clear that thanks to the micromorphological approach, it is possible to distin guish the ways of using individual objects, i.e., storage, livestock, and residential buildings belonging to di erent social classes. Of the last two mentioned types of objects, processes in their creation can also be deduced as a kind of cultural status of the researched objects. However, it is always a multidisciplinary approach; and therefore, it is necessary to link the study of oors, especially with the results of archaeological excavation and other methods, such as chemical analysis or dating.
