PHYTOREMEDIATION OF TOXIC METAL CONTAMINATED SOILS USING NON-TRADITIONAL FODDER CROPS
Original language description
The uptake of cadmium and lead by non-traditional fodder crops was examined in small-plot field trials. The trials were carried out in the years 2006-2007 in Troubsko on non-agricultural land. The experimental crops were safflower (Carthamus tinctorius L.), fenugreek (Trigonella foenum ? graecum L.), fodder mallow (Malva verticillata L.), rye (Secale cereale L. var. multicaule METZG. ex ALEF) and white sweet clover (Melilotus alba L). The effect of compost application to soil on toxic metal uptake by these crops was also examined. Four experimental treatments were used: 1) no contamination; 2) no contamination with compost; 3) heavy metals with compost; 4) heavy metals. The most suitable crop for cadmium uptake seems to be fodder mallow and the best crop for lead uptake is rye, always in the treatment with compost applied.
