Research and development of production of Ti feedstock for dental implants in conform equipment
Original language description
Titanium and its alloys are frequently used in many sectors, including the health care sector, where they outperform other materials. From the biocompatibility viewpoint, the preferred condition of these materials is ultrafine or nanostructured state. Very fine-grained stock can be produced on industrial scale in CONFORM equipment, which is based on continuous ECAP process (Equal Channel Angular Pressing). This paper gives a description of this forming process and of its application in production of feedstock for dental implants. CP-titanium was used for the present experimental programme. The factors explored in process trials included the impact of the shape of the exit chamber and of the temperatures at key locations within the CONFORM process on the resulting microstructure of titanium. Subsequent modifications were based on results of numerical simulation of the process in DEFORM software. The actual flow of material was compared with that described by the simulation.
